Growing a Farmer (Part 2)

In this post, I want to highlight some of the lecture notes I've noticed from Writing for Work while reading Growing a Farmer and comment on my favorite parts of the book. Overall, I think it was a great read and was different than what I would usually pick up. In chapter 3 of Writing for Work, we learned about using effective examples. Timmermeister has a beautiful example where he compares getting bees into a hive with eating a chocolate bar. He describes exactly what he expects to see, smell, and feel when he unwraps his favorite chocolate bar, and compares it to releasing the bees. I could totally envision the whole bee release process! Additionally, in lecture we have talked several times about making your topic or point easy to find. Each of Timmermeister's chapter titles tell me exactly what I will be reading about and make the book easy to flip through. In chapter 15, the Cookhouse dinner menus are easy to find (and look really tasty). Timmermeister could have ea...

Job Description - Team Manager

USC Swimming & Diving  Team Manager Free athletic gear, priority class registration, travel opportunities, and USC Athletic Department connections. Working as a team manager gives me all the perks of being an athlete, except I don’t have to work out 35 hours a week!  Working in college isn’t always a blast, but finding a job you love on-campus can make work feel like a fun extracurricular. Plus, a little extra cash to burn on the weekends never hurt. For the last four years, I have managed the USC Swimming & Diving team. What exactly does a swimming manager do since there are no balls to shag or water bottles to fill? Good question. An athletic team manager’s role changes throughout the athletic seasons (such as championship season or off-season). My main contributions to the swim team are:  ·          Practice Assistant ·          Apparel ·     ...

Growing a Farmer (Part 1)

I finally got Growing a Farmer by Kurt Timmermester in the mail today! So far I've only read the first two chapters, but wanted to share my initial thoughts and will be sure to add more as I continue to read. On the very first page, Kurt describes the farm saying, "I pretend to control it, but often it controls me." Immediately I thought, "RELATEABLE." Kurt lives in the Seattle area and I love the way he describes the city. After living there this past summer, I can almost imagine him walking through the markets, getting onto the ferry, or experiencing the "complete darkness of night" on the island. This evening I was sitting in horrible traffic on the way to Palm Dessert and also realized how different night is at school in LA where there is constant buzzing and dim lighting. At this point, Kurt is like many young people, trying to "grow up" fast and just trying to make the next right decision. Like many of us, he finds himself making qui...

Who You Are Matters

Image
Welcome! I’m Kelly, a senior from Yorba Linda, CA. I moved to Yorba Linda from San Diego in eighth grade. Although I don’t have a deep connection to the actual town, the people there make Yorba Linda home. My friends are family, and all our families are friends. After graduation in May, I’m moving to Seattle to start my next chapter at Microsoft. I’m not totally sure if Microsoft is “it” for me, but it’s a great opportunity for me to figure it out. My parents and I don’t always see eye to eye, but I see myself becoming more like them. My mom has worked every day of her life. She loves to contribute, to help organizations improve, and to stay busy. I’m very like her in this way. I crave a hectic schedule and love to be involved. Like my mom, I think I will find work that I love and then “work” every day of my life. My dad is the definition of selfless. I’m not quite as generous with my time and energy, but I do see myself being as patient, calm, and tolerant as my dad. For ...
