Growing a Farmer (Part 1)

I finally got Growing a Farmer by Kurt Timmermester in the mail today! So far I've only read the first two chapters, but wanted to share my initial thoughts and will be sure to add more as I continue to read. On the very first page, Kurt describes the farm saying, "I pretend to control it, but often it controls me." Immediately I thought, "RELATEABLE." Kurt lives in the Seattle area and I love the way he describes the city. After living there this past summer, I can almost imagine him walking through the markets, getting onto the ferry, or experiencing the "complete darkness of night" on the island. This evening I was sitting in horrible traffic on the way to Palm Dessert and also realized how different night is at school in LA where there is constant buzzing and dim lighting.

At this point, Kurt is like many young people, trying to "grow up" fast and just trying to make the next right decision. Like many of us, he finds himself making quick decisions and in over his head. Yet he is proud and willing to put in the necessary work needed to create the future he envisions. I am interested to see how his story will evolve. Since living in Seattle last summer and visiting some of the most incredible farmer's markets, I've become more interested in where food comes from and I hope to learn more from Kurt's perspective.

  1. HI Kelly,

I like that you paid attention to the city he describes in the book because his description also impressed me. Although I never live in Seattle area, his description of the city and the island vividly show an image of the city in my brain. Also now the book has trigger my interest to start thinking how food is produced.
